04 — About
Day 19 formed in the spring of 1997 in northern New Jersey. Inspired by Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and the Suicide Machines, guitarist and vocalist Jason Foley set out to build a ska punk band. Teaching guitar at Spinosa Music in Belleville, NJ, he crossed paths with drummer Dennis "Woody" Alfonso — whose roots in Latin and Cuban music made him a natural fit. The two hit it off immediately, and the foundation was laid.
The band initially formed under the name Wonderboy before settling on Day 19 — named for May 19th, 1997, the day the original lineup came together, and a local skate shop in Montclair, NJ. Original trombone player Obi Fernandez and saxophonist Ryan Dominguez joined early on. When the original bassist departed, Jason brought in his brother Brian "Butt" Foley. Saxophonist Dave Zaretsky and trumpeter Aziz Nekoukar — who had crossed paths with Obi and Ryan at a high school music summer camp in Bloomfield — rounded out the seven-piece.
In their original run the band played over 200 shows across the East Coast — including three Vans Warped Tour dates in NYC and Asbury Park, gigs alongside Run DMC, Less Than Jake, the Suicide Machines, 10,000 Maniacs, and Moe, and touring runs with The Toasters and Big D and the Kids Table. They released their debut full-length "13 Legs" in 1998 before going on hiatus in 2002. After more than two decades away, Day 19 reformed in 2024 and are back gigging in the New Jersey area.
